Castor oil has been used as a natural conditioner and scalp treatment for centuries. Here it has been added to coconut and olive oil, giving these lavender and tea tree shampoo bars extra richness and a wonderful ability to moisturise.  Meanwhile, the bar’s essential oils of lavender and tea tree do a great job of promoting healthy hair growth and providing antibacterial properties too.

Brand Story: These shampoo bars are made in the UK by Friendly Soap - a company with an extraordinary ethos! Their ranges contain no animal products or by-products and have never been tested on animals, which has allowed them to earn a registration with Cruelty free International and The Vegan Society. Their soap is totally biodegradable and free from by-products too, so there’s literally no waste, plus they are free from palm oil, SLS and parabens!

Friendly Lavender & Tea Tree Shampoo Bar

  • What does it replace and is it an improvement?

Shampoo bars are a plastic free alternative to liquid shampoo that comes in a bottle (they are essentially just a solid version). These bars come in a 100% recycled cardboard box that is fully recyclable.

I always find with liquid shampoo that a lot of what I pour out in my hand doesn't actually end up on my hair, and just ends up down the drain. With shampoo bars, they can either be applied in your hands (like a bar of soap) and then the product massaged into your hair, or if you're anything like me, (I have thick curly hair) I like to apply the bar directly to my hair all over to get good coverage. This means no product is accidentally wasted by it falling off your hands in the shower.

Although the bars might look small, they last a lot longer than your standard bottle of shampoo - on average about three bottles of shampoo to one bar. Just make sure that the bar is never sat in water as this will make the bar disappear quicker. As shampoo bars go, these are a fairly budget friendly alternative considering Lush shampoo bars tend to be around the £8/£9 mark.

Some people may experience a transition phase with these bars where your hair essentially 'detoxes' from the chemicals previously used. Please see here some guidance to help with the transition phase if you experience this.

  • What is my review?

As these are a more budget friendly shampoo bar to the Soul & Soap range and the ingredients in them are minimal, I wanted to give them a go.

I live in a hard water area which unfortunately can make it much more difficult to rinse the lather out, leaving a waxy feeling on your hair. I found this with these bars which I was a bit gutted about - I couldn't seem to shake the waxy feeling. This doesn't necessarily mean that they won't work for you if you live in a hard water area; some people seem to get on fine with them so they're always worth a try. The feedback I've had from these bars is that soft water areas don't tend to have any issues, so you should be fine if you live in a soft water area.

With some natural shampoo bars, there can be a bit of a transition phase. I have included above a link to the guidance from Friendly of how to deal with these transition phases.

Lavender & Tea Tree are two of my favourite fragrances so I love that this bar contains both in one bar! If it wasn't for the issues I had due to living in a hard water area, I would be using these bars for sure!

Friendly don't recommend using these bars for colour treated hair as it can cause fading. For shampoo bars that are suitable for coloured hair, please take a look at the Soul & Soap range on the Hair Care page.

My rating: 6/10 - I love the smell of these bars and the ethos of Friendly. The rating is purely down to the hard water issues I had.
