Brand Story:

Barnaby's Brushes was founded 3 years ago by Barnaby who wanted to create a product that would reduce plastic waste. Plastic toothbrushes are used for such little time but stay around for hundreds of years without breaking down, so this sparked on the idea of the metal toothbrush! You only have to replace the bamboo head which once thrown away, will biodegrade in 6 months, leaving a lot less waste behind!

  • Dentists usually recommend that toothbrushes are replaced every 3 months. Average life expectancy in the UK is 80 years old which means over our lifetime, we use and throw away roughly 320 toothbrushes each. Worldwide, that is a massive amount of toothbrushes all ending up in landfill!

Bamboo is considered to be a sustainable resource because it is fast growing so reproduces quickly, and is completely biodegradable. Unfortunately, the bristles of these replacement brush heads are still made of Nylon which is a form of plastic although research shows that this breaks down naturally and at only 0.2 grams per head, this is a lot less waste being thrown away each time than a full plastic toothbrush.

The main positive about these metal toothbrushes that differentiates them from normal bamboo toothbrushes, is that the bottom of the metal handle won't go mouldy like some bamboo toothbrushes can do when they're sat in your toothbrush holder.

Most plastic toothbrushes can be found very cheaply - usually you can find a family pack of 4 in supermarkets for £1, although you can buy the branded ones for anything up to £3/£4.  So in comparison, these metal toothbrushes and bamboo replacement heads are quite a bit pricier. Whether you deem it to be worth the extra price or not is down to personal preference. It keeps me up at night, the idea of (7.8 million global population x 320 toothbrushes - whatever huge number that comes out as) being thrown in landfill and left there for 1,000 years so for me, these are totally worth the additional expense.
